Question: Is there a reason why we should not read horoscopes? Isn’t it harmless fun? What’s the big deal anyway? Why won’t people just mind their business and let people [Christians or not] do what they want?
God’s Word is clear about astrology, divination and stargazing – There’s no future in them. {Read Isaiah 47:13-15; Isaiah 44:25; Daniel 2:1-49, Deuteronomy 18:10-14}.
According to Merriam-Webster:
A horoscope is a diagram of the relative positions of planets and signs of the zodiac at a specific time (as at one’s birth) for use by astrologers in inferring individual character and personality traits and in foretelling events of a person’s life.
Astrology is the divination of the supposed influences of the stars and planets on human affairs and terrestrial events by their positions and aspects.
Divination is the art or practice that seeks to foresee or foretell future events or discover hidden knowledge usually by the interpretation of omens or by the aid of supernatural powers.
As a young Christian, I had no idea that reading horoscopes was wrong but I didn’t believe in them either. I read the Bible but that part about astrology didn’t sink in. Maybe it skipped my eyes.
Horoscopes were all over the place [and still everywhere – newspapers, social media] and I just thought, “Oh well, let’s see what this has to say. Doing it for laughs.”
One day, I opened a magazine and was reading it and a friend said to me: “Oh, you shouldn’t read that.” And I asked: “Why not? I don’t believe in it. I think it’s just funny. Besides, how can what it says today apply to everyone born in a certain month?” And she showed me the Scriptures. I read it and I knew that wasn’t God’s way.
So, what am I saying?
Don’t assume that every Christian knows the Word inside out. Because someone is a Christian doesn’t mean that he or she knows everything about the Bible. However with constant studying and understanding of God’s Word, not forsaking fellowship with the brethren and with loving rebuke from mature Christians, we learn.
Every day is a learning process and may the Lord continue to fill us with His grace and mercy.
Should Christians read horoscopes?
No. God’s Word is clear about astrology, divination and stargazing – there’s no future in them. Our future is in the Lord’s hands. God (Yahweh, Elohim, the Alpha and the Omega) is our Creator and we worship and trust in Him.
We look to the Creator, and not man. He has given us His Word that is a lamp to our feet and light to our path. We have it to show us the way, to teach and help us. We have the Holy Spirit, our Counselor, who talks to us in many ways.
Let’s keep our eyes on Jesus, who leads us and makes our faith complete (Hebrews 12:2). Amen.
